Apple Valley High School senior Michelle Keohane continued the school's tradition of forensics success by winning the Lincoln-Douglas title at this year's State Debate Tournament Jan. 23-24. In her semifinal match, Keohane narrowly defeated classmate Chris Theis by a 3-2 score, then went on to beat the top seed from Edina 5-2 in the championship match.
In addition to Keohane and Theis, four other District 196 students were among the 26 qualifiers for state in Lincoln-Douglas debate, but did not advance to the final rounds. They are Will Cox and Namita Desai of Eagan High School and Vincent Cheng and Patrick Moran of Eastview High School. Tony Guidotti of Rosemount High School qualified as an alternate in Lincoln-Douglas.
In policy debate, the other category of competition, six district students qualified for state but did not advance to the final rounds. They are Eagan High School's Kyra Stephenson and Annie Martin of the School of Environmental Studies, Rosemount High School's Katherine Bleth and Anthony Nixon, and Hilary Campion and Beth Wallace of the School of Environmental Studies, competing with their home high school Eagan. Brianna Miller and Nicole Wagner of Eagan and Kayla Day of Rosemount were alternates.
